BBS FAQ

1. What is a Bulletin Board System?

A Bulletin Board System (BBS) is a local access computer service usually run on a regular personal computer. Some provide Internet connectivity using plug-in software. BBS' create communities providing chat, files, games and many other features.

2. Is it really free, or are there strings attached?

Most BBS' provide some free access when you create a basic user account. Additional time or Internet connectivity will be provided for a nominal fee.

(Webmaster's Note: Access to The SkyWalker's Court BBS is absolutely free.)

3. What is there to do on a local BBS or Internet BBS?

Besides getting to know local people and others coming in from the Internet, you can play several very good games. These aren't played against a computer, but rather against other callers. There are files to download and you can leave messages to other callers or Internet e-mail, even chat with other local callers or chat with other Internet users.

4. How do I get started?

All you need is a modem and an ANSI terminal program. If you don't have an ANSI terminal program, you can use Windows 95 HyperTerminal. These programs are NOT the best looking ANSI programs available, but they will get you online. Once online, you can look at other ANSI programs that you might like better.

5. What does a BBS offer that I can't already get on the Internet?

A BBS is a local computer service called by local people. When you dial locally into it, you become a part of it's community. The Internet, for the most part, is big and impersonal. If you start chatting, playing, or flirting with someone you meet online, they usually end up being hundreds, even thousands of miles away from you. When you meet someone on a local BBS, you're automatically going to have something in common with them just because you live in the same area.

6. How does a BBS compare to the internet?

If we compared the Internet to Disney World, we could compare the BBS to a small city park. Certainly there's a lot more to do and a lot more people at Disney World, but as most people know, there is still a lot of enjoyment and relaxation to be had at a local park.

A BBS is certainly different from the Internet, come check it out. It's easy to learn and very user friendly.

Even the Internet gets boring after a while, give us a call! Merge two great new resources combined - Internet and Bulletin Board Access.
